Scientists Create World’s First Gene-Edited Allergy-Free Dogs

Scientists have developed the world's first genetically modified dogs to assist individuals with severe dog allergies, enabling them to coexist with a pet without experiencing allergic reactions. Utilizing CRISPR gene-editing technology, researchers targeted the gene responsible for producing Can F 1, the primary allergen responsible for dog allergies.

The project's principal geneticist, Matt Walker, who has a severe dog allergy, was able to adopt a genetically modified dog named Bailey following the procedure. After initial testing, both beagles exhibited no physical abnormalities or unintended mutations. This breakthrough may provide hope to individuals worldwide who wish to own or care for dogs due to allergies, and the process could potentially aid in creating service dogs without triggering allergic reactions.

However, further research is required to ensure the stability of the gene edits and the successful application of similar techniques in other dog breeds.
