Saudi FDA first to approve Zynpexos for multiple myeloma

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has made history by becoming the first global regulator to approve Zynpexos for treating multiple myeloma in relapsed or refractory patients. Zynpexos, also known as iberdomide, is a novel medication that belongs to a class of drugs called cereblon E3 ligase modulators. It functions by disrupting the development of cancer cells and bolstering the immune system's assault on these malignant cells.

This groundbreaking approval comes after the drug was initially tagged under the Promising Medicines Program, which demonstrates the SFDA's dedication to making innovative treatments accessible to patients in Saudi Arabia. Zynpexos is typically used in conjunction with daratumumab and dexamethasone to enhance treatment outcomes for patients whose disease has not responded to conventional therapies.

During phase III clinical trials, it was discovered that the addition of iberdomide to treatment regimens led to a significant statistical improvement in patient outcomes compared to other treatment options. However, like all medications, Zynpexos is not without potential side effects. Common adverse reactions include decreased levels of certain blood cells, which can heighten the risk of infection or anemia, as well as dizziness, nausea, and skin rashes.
