Samsung SDI, GM to jointly develop prismatic EV batteries

SEOUL, Aug. 11 (Yonhap) -- Battery manufacturer Samsung SDI has formed a joint venture with General Motors to develop next-generation electric vehicle batteries. The agreement will focus on creating prismatic batteries with high energy density and fast-charging capabilities. In addition to the joint research and development efforts, Samsung SDI will take over GM's 49.99 percent stake in their US$3.5 billion joint venture, Synergy Cells, which was established in 2024 to build an EV battery plant in the United States.

Samsung SDI currently owns 50.01 percent of the venture. The primary goal is to continue their collaborative work to create future mobility solutions and to meet the increasing demand for energy storage systems in the U.S. market. The planned EV battery plant in Indiana, United States, will have a production capacity of over 30 gigawatt hours per year, but the exact timeline for its commercial operation has not been determined.

Samsung SDI already operates a 23-GWh EV battery plant in Indiana through a joint partnership with Stellantis N.V.
