Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Survives Brutal Sand and Bend Durability Test

Samsung's latest flagship foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold8, has successfully passed rigorous durability tests conducted by Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything. Nelson evaluated the phone's new Flex Titanium display, redesigned hinge, and overall chassis in terms of scratches, sand, and bending.

The new Flex Titanium display structure, which combines an aluminum plate with a titanium alloy film, is specifically designed to reinforce the folding OLED panel and reduce the crease formed during folding. However, it does not significantly enhance scratch resistance beyond what other foldables possess. The inner screen maintains a plastic top layer, which is relatively easy to scratch, while the external 16:10 cover display features Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 for increased protection.

The redesigned hinge, which saw an upgrade for the Z Fold8, excelled in Nelson's test for preventing debris from entering the device. The new hinge design managed to keep most of the sand and grit outside the phone, and the teardown revealed that most of the phone's chassis is made from Armor Aluminum, with the camera island still using a plastic material.

During the bend test, Nelson examined how the Galaxy Z Fold8, which now features a wider 4:3 aspect ratio, could withstand pressure when bent in unusual directions. The phone's Flex Titanium construction and redesigned hinge were intended to strengthen the folding display against the mechanical stresses of everyday use, while also providing additional protection against debris infiltration.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is part of Samsung's premium foldable lineup, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, while the Z Flip8 uses a different internal display construction.
