S. Korea to upgrade key battle tank, anti-ship missile programs: arms agency

The Korean military is planning to enhance its Army's battle tank and Navy's anti-ship missile capabilities in response to evolving enemy threats, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA). The project, valued at 3.43 trillion won ($2.43 billion), aims to upgrade the K2 main battle tank with advanced systems and deploy the upgraded Haesong-II long-range anti-ship missile.

The K2 battle tank upgrade will incorporate an active protection system (APS) capable of intercepting anti-tank missiles and drones. This system, known as a smart shield, utilizes radar to detect incoming threats and autonomously engage them. Additionally, the K2 will be equipped with a drone and improvised explosive device (IED) jammer to disrupt enemy communication signals, as well as a remote-controlled weapons station (RCWS) that allows crew members to safely aim and fire from inside the armored vehicle.

The K2 upgrade program is scheduled to run from 2028 to 2046, with the new tanks expected to enter service in 2033. Meanwhile, the DAPA will also initiate an upgrade project for the new Haesong-II long-range anti-ship missile. This project aims to double the missile's strike range, leveraging improved technology and capabilities.
