Row erupts over plans to convert listed pub in UK into mosque

Anger has erupted over plans to convert a Grade II-listed pub in Norwich, England, into a mosque. The Norwich Muslim Centre (NMC) has submitted proposals to the city council to transform the Gatehouse on Dereham Road into a place of worship featuring separate prayer halls for men and women, a madrassa for Quran memorization, and Islamic classes. The NMC purchased the pub with a 10% deposit and is seeking an additional £800,000 to complete the project.

Built in 1934, the pub closed in 2023 after the death of its owner. Prior attempts to buy the property by a community group were unsuccessful. NMC trustee Sirajul Islam expressed that the area in Norwich currently lacks sufficient mosque space and aims to create a center that empowers the next generation with a strong Islamic identity.

The plans have sparked controversy, with over 100 comments on the council's planning portal. Many residents object to the proposal, citing existing mosques nearby and concerns about the loss of pubs in the city. One commenter questioned whether gender segregation within the building complies with UK laws. Another argued that the majority of the population (96%) would not benefit from the facility but would face increased traffic and footfall.

However, some supporters argue that mosques often bring tranquility rather than disturbances, contrasting this with the occasional disruptions associated with pubs during weekend nights. The city council has not yet issued a decision on the matter.
