Ramsay-Peaty fifth in European Championships 100m final

Adam Ramsay-Peaty, the 31-year-old British swimmer with 16 European Championships gold medals to his name, experienced a rare defeat at the 100m breaststroke final in Paris. He had never lost a heat, semi-final, or final in this event before. Olympic champion Nicolo Martinenghi claimed victory, clocking 58.58 seconds, followed closely by Ivan Kozhakin in second place and Simone Cerasuolo of Italy in third.

Ramsay-Peaty finished just 0.01 seconds and one position behind his Great Britain teammate, Filip Nowacki. The three-time Olympic champion expressed confusion following a disappointing performance at the Commonwealth Games, where he secured two bronze medals. His time of 59.10 seconds in Paris was a significant improvement of 0.55 seconds over his performance at the Commonwealth Games.

In the mixed 4x100m medley relay final, Ramsay-Peaty contributed an impressive 58.9 seconds in the breaststroke leg, but Great Britain's team finished fourth. Katie Shanahan of Great Britain secured gold in the 200m backstroke, winning by 1.49 seconds with a time of two minutes and six seconds. It was her second gold at the European Aquatics Championships, having also won silver in the same race at the 2022 edition in Rome.

Angharad Evans of Great Britain set a new championship record in the women's 100m breaststroke semi-final with a time of 1:04.97.
