Ramaphosa to address UKZN Westville public lecture

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the public on the Southern African Development Community's (SADC) vision at a lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Westville Campus on Friday. The event is part of South Africa's role as the host of the 46th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the SADC. The lecture, themed "Translating SADC Vision 2050 into Action: Pathways Towards Solidarity, Equality, and Shared Prosperity," aims to encourage dialogue among various sectors of society to strengthen public ownership of the regional integration agenda.

Vincent Magwenya, the President's spokesperson, stated that the lecture will serve as a platform for high-level reflection and public discussion on practical ways to advance regional integration, industrialization, infrastructure development, peace, security, and inclusive development in Southern Africa. The theme highlights the importance of converting the Vision 2050 from a long-term aspiration into tangible programs, investments, and measurable outcomes that benefit citizens and communities across member states.

Additionally, the lecture will reflect on the progress made toward achieving the vision, including successes, persistent challenges, emerging risks, and opportunities that require accelerated regional action. Amid global uncertainties, climate-related shocks, economic pressures, and the need to enhance regional resilience, the lecture offers policymakers, academics, business leaders, regional experts, diplomats, students, and the public an essential opportunity to engage on how SADC can move from aspiration to implementation, delivering tangible improvements in the lives and livelihoods of Southern Africa's people.
