Public safety MMC urges Joburg residents to prepare for severe cold weather and possible snowfall

Johannesburg's Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, Moshe Koma, is urging residents to prepare for severe cold weather and potential snowfall in the city. According to Koma, a significant drop in temperatures, along with cloudy conditions, rain and showers, has been forecasted. While snowfall cannot be ruled out in elevated areas, residents are being advised to take necessary precautions.

Koma emphasized that residents should not underestimate the dangers associated with extremely cold weather. He advised both residents and motorists to take precautionary measures, even in the absence of snowfall. The city's public safety official called on people to keep warm and ensure that children, the elderly, and vulnerable individuals are well-protected from the cold.

Regarding heating appliances, Koma cautioned residents against using unsafe or makeshift electrical connections and advised them to avoid leaving open flames and heating appliances unattended. Proper ventilation was also stressed to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. For road safety, motorists were urged to reduce their speed, increase following distances, and exercise vigilance on wet, slippery or potentially icy roads.

They were also advised to ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy and that tyres, brakes, lights, and windscreen wipers were in good working condition.

In addition to these safety measures, Koma encouraged residents to secure loose objects around their homes and businesses and to check on vulnerable neighbors, particularly the elderly and those living in informal or poorly insulated structures. The city's Department of Public Safety is actively monitoring the situation, along with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, Emergency Management Services, the South African Weather Service, and other relevant departments.

The message remains clear: prepare, remain vigilant, and stay informed. The city, Koma added, is resilient, but severe weather demands responsible action from all citizens.
