Private medical practitioners seek tax waivers on cancer treatment equipment

The Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners has requested the Ghanaian government to waive import duties and taxes on advanced cancer treatment equipment. This move aims to enhance access to specialized care throughout the nation. The Society's President, Dr Andre Kwasi Kumah, emphasized the necessity of removing financial obstacles that hinder private healthcare providers from acquiring modern technology for improved cancer diagnosis and treatment.

At the Society's 45th Annual General Meeting, stakeholders also deliberated on enhancing healthcare delivery and fostering collaboration between public and private sectors.

Dr Kumah urged the government not only to waive import duties and taxes but also to expedite the clearance of such equipment at ports. He further proposed additional financial support for private healthcare establishments to invest in cutting-edge equipment and expand service provision. He emphasized that facilitating financing would enable private health facilities to undertake investments crucial for bolstering Ghana’s healthcare system.

Dr Kumah also suggested the establishment of a dedicated Chamber of Health under the Ministry of Health to improve coordination between private providers and the government.
