Phuoc Hai boosts value of specialty yellow-fleshed longan

The coastal ward of Phuoc Hai, Vietnam, is working to elevate the economic value of its specialty yellow-fleshed longan crop during a prosperous harvest season. This fruit, unique to the sandy coastal region, has become a regional pride for farmers and local authorities.

Local government and farmers have joined forces to develop the brand value of the longan, ensuring that farmers reap the benefits of their efforts. In August, the farmer-led initiative saw orchards in An Hoa, Long May, and Hoi May hamlets brimming with ripe fruit, accompanied by the sweet aroma of the harvest and the joyful sounds of visitors.

Truong Phuong Thanh, a 30-year veteran of longan cultivation in An Hoa Hamlet, tends to over 4.2 hectares of longan trees, maintaining a stable income of VND300 million to VND400 million annually from her orchard. The sandy soil in the region is ideal for longan cultivation, allowing Thanh to grow over 1,000 trees of various types, contributing to a yearly income of VND12 billion to VND20 billion.

Chairwoman Huynh Thi Ngoc Diep of the Phuoc Hai Ward Farmers' Association revealed that nearly 50 hectares of longans are cultivated by 47 farming households in the area, providing a reliable income source and raw material for value-added products, agricultural tourism, and farm visits. To support farmers, the ward authority has been actively involved in training on VietGAP standards, digital technology applications, QR code traceability, and partnerships for product consumption.

In response to the unexpected surge in supply during the harvest, the local government collaborated with various stakeholders to promote the longan fruit on digital platforms, helping to sell the fruit and elevate the value of the specialty longan region. In 2026, a model of agricultural production combined with community-based longan orchard tourism was launched, with 14 longan-growing households participating in activities such as orchard tours, photography, and on-site fruit tasting.

This initiative has generated additional service revenue, promoted the brand, and boosted product sales.

Visitors now flock to orchards like Hoa Thuan Longan Orchard, owned by Truong Thi Bay, to taste the unique longans and enjoy the peaceful rural atmosphere. The distinctive flavor of Phuoc Hai longans, attributed to the sandy soil, abundant sunshine, and sea breeze, sets them apart from other varieties. In 2026, approximately 35 hectares of longans in Phuoc Hai Ward are expected to be harvested, generating an estimated production value of VND12 billion to VND20 billion per season.
