Patients Wary of Governments, Companies Pushing AI as a Rural Healthcare Solution

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. — U.S. health officials predict that artificial intelligence (AI) will play a crucial role in addressing healthcare challenges in rural America. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suggested AI nurses could provide "concierge care" to rural patients, while Mehmet Oz, head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, believes AI-based avatars could connect rural patients to mental health services.

Many states are utilizing funding from the $50 billion federal Rural Health Transformation Program to expand AI in rural healthcare organizations. However, there is little evidence to suggest that AI can improve access to care and patient health in rural areas. Skepticism exists among some rural Americans, with Tara Haffner, a resident of Hot Springs, South Dakota, expressing concerns about AI making mistakes and preferring a more personal approach to healthcare.

On the other hand, Phillip Mues, who oversees technology at a rural hospital in Nebraska, claims AI can help clinicians save time, reduce burnout, and allow clinicians to focus more on patient care, without replacing human staff. Despite the enthusiasm for AI adoption, some rural hospitals might not be able to afford the necessary resources to overcome challenges such as closure or discontinuation of certain services.

The five-year Rural Health Transformation Program was established last summer to address concerns about the impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on rural communities, aiming to offset the anticipated reduction in Medicaid spending by over $900 billion over a decade.
