Oburu resigns as Senate Energy Committee chairperson

Orange Democratic Movement Party Leader and Senator for Siaya County, Oburu Odinga, has voluntarily resigned from his position as chairperson of the Senate Energy Committee. His resignation, announced on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, during a committee meeting, was described as voluntary and peaceful by Odinga, who emphasized that there was no coup and that the position was being taken over by Marakwet Senator William Kipsang in an acting capacity.

Odinga stressed that whoever is elected to replace him will do so peacefully. Despite stepping down from the chairmanship, Odinga will retain his membership in the Senate Energy Committee. The move occurs as the ODM leader assumes a more prominent role within the broad-based government and as the party prepares for the 2027 General Election.

Kipsang, who was unanimously elected as the new chairperson, acknowledged Odinga's influence within the committee and thanked the members for their confidence. Beatrice Ogolla, a nominated Senator, was elected vice-chairperson, succeeding Kisang, who had previously served as deputy chairperson under Odinga.
