Nonthaburi governor denies special treatment for gunman former MP

Nonthaburi Governor Chetsada Mosigrat has refuted allegations that former MP Chalong Riewraeng was granted special treatment while in police custody following the shooting of Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) Chairman Pol. Colonel Thongchai Yenprasert. Governor Chetsada visited Rattanathibet Police Station on August 10 to monitor the case's progress.

Chongchai is charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder, and carrying a firearm in a public place without reasonable cause. The police have applied for a court warrant to search Chongchai's home for evidence. CCTV footage shows Chongchai smoking near police officers during detention, a fact the governor attributes to Chongchai requesting permission due to stress.

Chetsada confirmed that Chongchai was handcuffed and followed standard police procedures while in custody. The case will now be reviewed by prosecutors. The Nonthaburi PAO will hold an election to fill the vacated position following Thongchai's death. The Election Commission is discussing the schedule with the PAO. Security measures have been heightened following the shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, and the government has issued stricter firearm regulations.
