Ninth Circuit Dismisses Meta, TikTok Appeals in Social Media Addiction Cases

The Ninth Circuit dismissed Meta and TikTok's early appeals in social media addiction lawsuits, preventing a significant wave of cases from being resolved at the appellate level. The decision on August 10 did not determine whether Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act protects the companies from liability, but rather found that Meta and TikTok could not use the statute to bypass further defense of the litigation.

The cases involve claims from various entities alleging that social media platform designs contributed to addiction and mental health issues among young users. While Section 230 may still be raised later in the litigation, plaintiffs must still prove that the platform's design choices caused the alleged harms. The ruling allows lower courts to continue processing thousands of social media addiction lawsuits.
