Mumbai Crime: Former Police Informer Arrested For Alleged ₹1 Crore Burglary At Actress Lopamudra Raut’s Santacruz Flat

On August 11, 2026, a 26-year-old man named Chandan Mukhiya was apprehended in Darbhanga, Bihar, for allegedly stealing approximately Rs 1 crore worth of cash, gold, diamond-studded jewelry, watches, and other valuables from actress Lopamudra Raut's Santacruz flat.

Mukhiya, who previously served as a police informer aiding the Gamdevi police in cracking a house-theft case in 2021, had been observing investigation techniques and methods during his time with the Gamdevi police. He allegedly utilized this knowledge to evade detection in his current criminal activities.

Prior to this incident, Mukhiya had allegedly stolen valuables worth Rs 1.8 crore from his diamond-merchant employer near Breach Candy Hospital and later buried them near his family home in Bihar. He had faced arrest in another burglary case worth Rs 25 lakh and was subsequently released on bail.

After his release, Mukhiya stayed at a Mumbai Central dormitory and conducted reconnaissance across the city. He noticed scaffolding outside Raut's Santacruz West building and reportedly entered her fifth-floor flat between 4 am and 5 am on July 14, carrying away the stolen property. The police recovered items worth Rs 76.39 lakh.

CCTV footage and technical surveillance aided in tracing Mukhiya and his uncle, Lalu Mukhiya, who fled Mumbai on the Jai Sagar Express towards the India-Nepal border. Lalu Mukhiya, 45, was also arrested and is currently wanted for allegedly helping dispose of the stolen valuables.

Upon returning from Nagpur on July 27, Raut found her flat locked from the outside. A building staffer entered through the balcony and opened the door. Mukhiya claimed to have randomly targeted the flat after observing the scaffolding and completed the burglary within an hour.
