The Mumbai Crime Branch has apprehended retired administrative officer Ramkishan Goswami, 64, from Kanjurmarg in connection with a ₹6.5 crore payroll fraud allegedly perpetrated within the Mumbai Police department. The retired officer, who tendered his resignation in 2023, has been handed over to the police custody by the court till August 17. Five individuals have been implicated in the case.

According to the police, the fraudulent scheme was rooted in irregularities within the Mumbai Police's payroll system, leading to the unlawful distribution of substantial funds. The Crime Branch conducted the arrest of Goswami during an investigation into the alleged financial misdemeanors. The authorities are currently probing the involvement of the remaining four accused and scrutinizing the payroll process to pinpoint any lapses and those responsible for the fraudulent transactions.

Goswami appeared before the Esplanade court after his arrest. The court, after hearing the prosecution's arguments, granted the Crime Branch the authority to keep him in custody until August 17. The investigating team is meticulously examining payroll records, bank transactions, and other official documents to establish the precise magnitude of the alleged fraud and ascertain the extent of involvement of other individuals.

Further probe is underway to unravel the complexities of the alleged scam and bring the perpetrators to justice.
