Migori main bridge collapses further, cutting off pedestrians and motorcyclists

A section of the Migori Main Bridge in Suna West Sub-County tragically collapsed, threatening the safety of both pedestrians and motorcyclists who persistently utilized the crossing despite its closure. The incident unfolded on Monday, August 10, 2026, at approximately 7:47pm, according to police. The bridge had previously suffered damage and partial collapse in February following severe flooding.

However, one side of the bridge has now sunk even further, generating a substantial hole and exacerbating the danger posed by the crossing. Police officers, led by Suna West Sub-County Police Commander Chrispinus Ogutu, examined the scene and confirmed that the right side of the bridge had become unstable and blocked access to Migori town.

Authorities took immediate action to prevent any potential casualties by restricting the public's access to the town via the bridge. A team of engineers from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is scheduled to inspect the bridge and offer guidance on the next steps forward. Police reported no casualties or other significant incidents at the time of filing the report.

Residents implored authorities to hasten the resolution of the issue. Authorities have strongly urged the public, especially pedestrians and motorcyclists, to refrain from utilizing the compromised section until the engineers deem it safe to do so.
