Mets' Andy Green on what Jonah Tong needs to show to get a call-up: 'We think he has the stuff to pitch here'

Interim Mets manager Andy Green believes right-handed pitcher Jonah Tong possesses the necessary skills to succeed in the majors. Green praised Tong's fastball and curveball during the team's recent game against the Braves, noting that Tong's changeup has also returned to being a reliable pitch. Despite Tong's inconsistent performance, Green stated that the organization is confident in his ability to fill the strike zone and dominate a game if given the opportunity.

Tong's season has been marked by a 5.46 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP in 19 starts, striking out 103 batters while walking 49. However, his walk count has increased compared to last season's 47. Tong made three starts for the Mets earlier in the season but struggled, allowing six runs on eight hits and seven walks over 10 innings. Before his recent five-homer game, Tong was pitching much better, posting a 3.65 ERA in July with three of his five starts allowing two or fewer runs.

Green emphasized that the Mets want to see tangible evidence of Tong's success before bringing him back up from Triple-A. The manager confirmed that starting pitcher Robert Stock will continue to pitch in the rotation, making his next start. Tong's next opportunity to make an impact will likely be in Triple-A, but if he continues to improve and demonstrate consistency, he may see a return to the majors.
