Methodist Church Vows to Speak Truth to Govt, Calls for Urgent Action on Insecurity

The Methodist Church, Nigeria, has stated its unwavering commitment to speaking the truth to government, even if it risks provoking a response from those in power. This assertion comes after a recent conference held in Ibadan, Oyo State, from August 2 to 9, with the theme “I Will Fight for You.”

Speaking at the conclusion of the 50th/15th Biennial Conference, Dr. Oliver Ali-Aba, the Prelate of the Church, urged the federal government to take more decisive action to address widespread issues plaguing the nation. These concerns include economic hardship, unemployment, corruption, and a decline in living standards. Despite the government's increased revenues and allocations, the church observed that the welfare of ordinary Nigerians has not significantly improved.

The church also endorsed the creation of State Police, viewing it as a crucial element in comprehensive security reform. Such a reform would enhance grassroots intelligence gathering and facilitate quicker responses to emerging security threats across the country. During his address, Dr. Ali-Aba encouraged the church and the nation to draw strength from faith, righteousness, justice, and collective action.

He reassured the audience that, despite Nigeria's present challenges, God's promise of protection remains steadfast, declaring, “The Lord shall fight for you.”

However, the church expressed deep concern over the worsening economic situation, noting that while the government has undertaken reform efforts in some key sectors, these have not adequately addressed the pressing issues of hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and declining living standards faced by millions of Nigerians. The church identified corruption, impunity, and the mismanagement of public resources as significant obstacles to national development.

It emphasized that the current economic difficulties necessitate a stronger focus on accountability and leadership that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.
