Meet Snowflake Volunteer: Tor's Android app that lets you help people bypass censorship

Tor has introduced Snowflake Volunteer, a dedicated Android application that enables users to assist individuals residing in regions with restricted internet access in circumventing censorship. This innovative app is the outcome of a collaboration between the Tor network and Portuguese software firm Bloco. Tor is renowned for its censorship-resistant browser, but the Snowflake Volunteer app takes the initiative further by allowing non-technical users to contribute to the cause without requiring extensive technical knowledge.

The app is built upon Tor's pluggable transport, which enables users on censored networks to connect to the Tor network using volunteer-operated proxies, rendering their connection indistinguishable from regular web traffic. Since its launch in April, Snowflake Volunteer has observed a 29% increase in unique proxy IP addresses daily, from approximately 1,300 in May to 1,700 in June, signifying a significant growth in public awareness and volunteer participation.

By leveraging altruistic digital privacy measures, Tor Browser routes internet traffic through a series of secure computers operated by volunteers globally, creating a protective layer akin to an onion that prevents unauthorized tracking of users. Just like premium Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Tor is centered on safeguarding online privacy. However, its effectiveness hinges on the willingness of people worldwide to volunteer their devices as access points.

Snowflake Volunteer empowers users in more censored countries to contribute to this cause by transforming their mobile devices into proxies, which, when connected to the Tor network, appear as if they are engaging in legitimate video or audio calls. This system has proven highly beneficial in countries like Iran, where the 'domain fronting' technique is employed to establish connections with numerous Snowflake proxies managed by volunteers.

To encourage wider adoption, the Snowflake Volunteer app has been designed to be user-friendly, accessible via F-Droid and Google Play, or built from the source code, with various customization options available. Users can limit the app's operation to networks with unlimited data or set a cap on the number of simultaneous connections.

By enabling Snowflake Volunteer, users can actively participate in the Tor network's expansion and directly contribute to the alleviation of internet censorship faced by millions around the world.
