Mauritius visit highlights India's defence outreach to Africa as major powers vie for influence

Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, the Chief of the Naval Staff, embarked on a four-day official visit to Mauritius from August 10 to 13, 2026. The timing of his visit reflects India's increasing focus on consolidating its maritime presence in the Indian Ocean Region, with Mauritius standing out as a trusted partner in this endeavor. During his stay, Admiral Swaminathan is set to meet high-ranking members of the Mauritian government, discussing a range of topics including maritime security, defence cooperation, capacity building, and military-to-military collaboration.

These interactions aim to fortify operational ties between the navies of both nations and solidify the robust strategic partnership that already exists. The relationship between India and Mauritius in the maritime domain is not new, with the Indian Navy having a long-standing history of cooperation including joint training, surveillance, port calls, and hydrographic surveys.

This visit is viewed as a testament to the importance New Delhi places on the relationship, underpinned by trust, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to maintaining stability and security in the Indian Ocean. In a parallel development underscoring India's expanding defense outreach in Africa, an Indian Army contingent participated in Côte d'Ivoire's military parade commemorating the nation's 66th Independence Day.

The Indian contingent, numbering 60 personnel from the Regiment of Artillery, marched under the leadership of Major Sandeep Dhillon, invited by the Ivorian government. This gesture, just 18 months after India established a defense wing in Abidjan, underscores India's growing military training partnership with Côte d'Ivoire, further extending its defense footprint across Africa.
