Malawi: Bombshell Land Audit to Name Ministers, Judges and MPs Over Illegal Plot Grabs

Malawi's Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development is set to hold a press briefing on Wednesday to reveal the results of a pilot land ownership audit conducted in Lilongwe, a city that is home to some of the country's most influential people. The audit, which began in February 2026, is expected to expose widespread irregularities in the allocation of land plots, particularly in the capital's prime residential districts of Area 3 and Area 10.

The Ministry's invitation letter confirms that Minister of Lands Chimwemwe Chipungu will lead the briefing and expects to expose the names of ministers, judges, and MPs who have allegedly acquired plots through illegal means. The audit's findings, if proven true, could lead to a political crisis in Malawi, as it implicates high-ranking officials in a country where land access has often been a matter of favoritism and corruption.

The timing of the audit is significant as well, coming at a time when transparency and accountability are under intense scrutiny across public institutions, following other recent controversies such as the K128 billion Amaryllis Hotel purchase and undisclosed presidential travel expenses.
