Mahama must probe GOLDBOD losses – Abena Osei-Asare

Atewa East Member of Parliament and Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, Abena Osei-Asare, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to lead an extensive investigation into the financial losses suffered by the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD). The former Deputy Finance Minister highlighted that reported losses of $1.7 billion necessitate a thorough examination to ascertain how they occurred and if sufficient safeguards were put in place to protect public funds.

This call came after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported the loss. Osei-Asare stressed the importance of scrutinizing the matter through a detailed government-led review involving relevant state institutions. She also pointed out the potential opportunity cost of the funds, suggesting that they could have been used to address critical needs such as recruiting unemployed nurses, specifically citing the health sector, where GH¢6 billion could have been allocated.

Speaking to journalists on August 11, Osei-Asare also reminded the President of his earlier commitment to review the performance of state-owned enterprises, particularly those that are struggling or failing to generate sufficient returns. She urged Mahama to honor this commitment by conducting a comprehensive review of GOLDBOD, emphasizing the need for accountability in the management of public resources.
