Low-Tech Ceramic Water Filter

Ceramic water filters provide an affordable solution for purifying unsanitary water. These filters have been used locally for centuries to remove contaminants. In 1981, Dr Fernando Mazariegos developed this technology to make contaminated water safe for impoverished communities. The tutorial explains how a ceramic water filter works and outlines the steps needed to manufacture a semi-industrial scale filter.

The filter consists of a porous ceramic pot, filled with a clay mixture containing combustible materials like sawdust or rice husks. Colloidal silver may be added to the mixture to inhibit bacterial growth. As water flows through the filter, pathogens and suspended particles are physically trapped and eliminated. The tutorial emphasizes the importance of selecting suitable clay and combustible materials, along with proper firing techniques, to ensure the filter's effectiveness.
