Long-time OpenAI exec Brad Lightcap is leaving the ChatGPT maker to ‘start something new’

Brad Lightcap, a prominent figure in OpenAI's senior leadership, is departing the company to embark on a new venture, he announced on Tuesday. Lightcap, who did not disclose the nature of his new endeavor, noted that it would involve "a few important new things the world will need to get right" as AI becomes increasingly powerful and capable.

The move occurs as OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering that could value the San Francisco-based company at over $1 trillion, and amid growing concerns over agentic AI models like those developed by OpenAI and Anthropic. Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, contributing to the creation of various operational and business teams.

He served as Chief Financial Officer from 2018 to 2022, and later as Chief Operating Officer until April 2026, when he shifted to a role focused on special projects. Lightcap expressed excitement about the future, stating that he will have more to share about his new initiative soon. He emphasized his continued commitment to OpenAI, stating that he believes in the company's mission more than ever.
