Land acquisition in focus as Suvendu government drafts industrial policy

As the new BJP government in West Bengal charts its course for industrial development, land acquisition remains a pivotal topic at the forefront of discussions. Following a three-hour marathon meeting between industry leaders and the state's ministerial group on industry at Nabanna, the state secretariat, Commerce and Industries Minister Tapas Roy reaffirmed the government's commitment to transparent measures that prioritize industry interests and maintain public trust.

The government aims to circumvent land acquisition challenges that plagued previous administrations, such as the Singur and Nandigram agitations, by opting for direct land purchases instead. In a bid to boost investor confidence and restore industrial activity, the new government will introduce a streamlined single-window clearance mechanism for investment proposals exceeding Rs 100 crore.

The consultation process, unprecedented in scale, involved face-to-face dialogues with chambers of commerce and industrialists, signaling the government's intent to incorporate valuable insights into the forthcoming industrial policy. Additionally, the Centre's recent interest in tea garden workers and the textile sector, particularly the weavers, has garnered attention, as these industries hold significant political and economic sway for the BJP government, especially in North Bengal, a stronghold for the party.

The consultations are crucial as the BJP aims to bolster its credibility and restore industrial vitality by implementing policy reforms, incentives, and infrastructure development initiatives.
