Lahore hospitals report surge in gastroenteritis patients amid conflicting outbreak reports

Lahore hospitals are reporting a surge in gastroenteritis patients amid conflicting outbreak reports. Some hospitals, particularly Mayo Hospital, the provincial capital's largest teaching facility, have seen a significant influx of patients with severe complications, including kidney failure and stroke. Other government hospitals, like Lahore General Hospital, Jinnah Hospital, and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, have also experienced a rise in the number of patients. In contrast, Services Hospital's management claims its patient numbers are routine.

Lahore General Hospital's spokesperson attributed the increase to heavy rains in the city, while a senior medical consultant at Mayo Hospital, Dr. Salman Kazmi, suggested the possibility of an outbreak of cholera. Cholera outbreaks, according to Kazmi, typically involve a sudden surge in severe diarrhea and dehydration caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria from contaminated water or food. Poor hygiene, unsafe drinking water, and contaminated food can all contribute to such outbreaks.

Despite Dr. Kazmi's concerns, Prof. Zohra, the Principal of Services Hospital Lahore, denied any outbreak of diarrhoea or gastroenteritis, stating that everything was normal in the medical units. Dr. Mohammad Arshad, a former senior consultant at Shaikh Zayed Hospital, noted that hospitals and clinics typically see a sharp rise in patients suffering from stomach infections, diarrhea, vomiting, and fever during the monsoon season.

These illnesses are often caused by contaminated water and food, according to Arshad. He called on health authorities to investigate the situation and take precautionary measures, emphasizing that food businesses must also exercise caution.
