Kuria reminds Gachagua Uhuru is still Mt Kenya kingpin, urges him to go slow

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has advised Democracy for Citizens’ Party leader Rigathi Gachagua to proceed cautiously in his attempts to strengthen his political influence in the Mt Kenya region. In a message on social media platform X on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Kuria reminded Gachagua that former President Uhuru Kenyatta still holds significant political power in the region.

Kuria compared the process to David waiting patiently for 22 years before becoming king after being anointed by Samuel, urging Gachagua to "Come slowly, my brother Riggy G."

Kuria provided a clear indication of who currently wields political authority in Mt Kenya, stating, "For now, it’s Uhuru. Unless you resurrect John Michuki." This statement emphasizes Uhuru Kenyatta's prominent role in the political landscape of the region, even though he retired from the presidency in 2022. Despite his absence from active electoral politics, Kenyatta's name remains central to discussions about the region's future political direction.

The former Cabinet Secretary's remarks suggest that Gachagua should not assume that the political influence associated with Uhuru Kenyatta has been relinquished. Gachagua has emerged as a major political figure striving to establish a new political base outside the government, driven by his fallout with President William Ruto. His efforts have positioned him as a crucial player in determining the Mt Kenya vote in the 2027 election.

Kuria's latest comments follow earlier statements where he indicated that both Uhuru Kenyatta and Gachagua recognize each other's potential candidates for the region's political future. This assertion adds complexity to the succession debate, as political factions prepare for the 2027 presidential election. The Mt Kenya region's electoral significance stems from its substantial voter base and its ability to sway the outcome of a close presidential contest.

For Kuria, the transition of political leadership in Mt Kenya has not yet occurred. He urges Gachagua to exercise patience in his political succession plans in the region.
