Kogi assembly condemns community killings, seeks disbandment of vigilante groups

The Kogi State House of Assembly has demanded urgent assistance for victims of a recent mining disaster in Alufele, Enjema District of Ankpa Local Government Area, and advocated for stricter safety regulations to prevent future occurrences. Member Ibrahim Abbas, representing Ankpa II State Constituency, moved an urgent public importance motion during Tuesday’s plenary of the Eighth Assembly, prompting the House's resolution.

The mining incident, which occurred on July 14, 2026, resulted in multiple fatalities and sparked concerns over safety standards and mining practices in the region. Abbas appealed to the state government, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA), and other relevant bodies to provide immediate aid, medical care, and support to the affected individuals and their families.

Abass highlighted that the disaster serves as a stark reminder that the exploitation of the state’s mineral resources should be accompanied by responsible environmental management and adequate safety measures to safeguard everyone's well-being. He emphasized the necessity for heightened public awareness on mining safety, capacity-building programs for artisanal miners, and the provision of alternative livelihoods for those whose activities may be impacted by regulatory measures.

Speaker Aliyu Yusuf ruled on the motion, urging lawmakers to substantiate their claims with factual evidence when addressing constituents' concerns. Yusuf also called for stronger safety standards and enhanced monitoring of mining activities throughout Kogi State.
