Jeremiah Kioni: Opposition lacks money to conduct poll to pick 2027 flagbearer

Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has raised doubts about the opposition's financial ability to fund the 2027 presidential candidate selection process. Speaking to a local radio station, Kioni expressed concerns that the opposition may lack the necessary funds to run a nomination process and select a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

The opposition parties are currently engaged in discussions to coordinate their campaigns ahead of the 2027 election, including determining who should serve as the opposition's presidential flagbearer. Kioni emphasized that the focus should not only be on choosing a candidate capable of defeating Ruto, but also presenting voters with a clear alternative to the current administration.

Kioni stressed that opposition leaders must be straightforward about internal divisions within their ranks rather than portraying an image of unity that does not exist. He urged the opposition not to deceive voters by claiming unity while labeling other opposition members as "moles."

The comments shed light on the challenges faced by opposition parties as they strive to develop a united political platform ahead of the 2027 general election. Kioni also expressed positive views about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, who is being considered as a potential presidential contender by opposition parties.

Matiang'i, according to Kioni, is known for his non-populist approach, consistently speaking truthfully and following through on his commitments. He highlighted Matiang'i's previous successful track record in government, where he held senior positions, including Interior Cabinet Secretary.
