Indonesia’s President Nominates Central Bank Deputy as New Governor

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has appointed Destry Damayanti, a central bank deputy, as the new governor of the Bank of Indonesia (BI), according to an official announcement. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed that the nomination was submitted to the House of Representatives through a presidential letter, along with nominees for senior deputy roles at BI.

Destry, an experienced economist and former chief economist at Bank Mandiri, has been serving as the interim governor since Perry Warjiyo's unexpected resignation last month for personal reasons. Perry had been BI's governor since 2018 and had two years left on his term. Both appointments require approval from lawmakers, but given Prabowo's majority in the House, this is likely to be a formality.

If approved, Destry will become the first woman to hold the position permanently. The announcement has had a positive impact on the rupiah, which rose 0.79 percent against the US dollar in response to the news. However, investor confidence in Indonesia remains fragile due to the government's high-spending populist policies, increased state involvement in the economy, and recent ratings downgrades.

Perry Warjiyo's resignation came amid disagreements over fiscal policy with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, which may have provided some reassurance to investors with Destry's appointment. The true test of central bank independence will come after her confirmation, as markets will closely monitor whether BI accommodates Prabowo's policies or maintains its independence.
