Indonesia Pitches a Mercosur Trade Deal, With Brazil as the Broker

Indonesia has proposed a trade deal with Mercosur, with Brazil as the mediator. The smaller, quicker deal would focus on a select list of goods and cut tariffs, aiming to speed up the process compared to a comprehensive agreement. The idea was suggested at a BRICS trade ministers' meeting in Jaipur, India, with Indonesia's trade minister, Budi Santoso, hoping Brazil could help build consensus among Mercosur members.

Brazil's development, industry, trade, and services minister, Márcio Elias Rosa, indicated that Brazil is open to discussions and will study the proposal. The deal would cover tariffs on a range of goods, including palm oil, vehicles, rubber, and metals. Indonesia, the world's largest palm oil producer, wants to secure better access to the Brazilian market, which is a significant consumer of its products.

The broader Mercosur bloc is also seeking new trade partnerships, including with the EU, Japan, and China. This move by Indonesia could have significant implications for commodities markets, particularly in the agricultural sector.
