Indian expat in Dubai dies after suspected rat fever during vacation in Kerala

Dubai: An Indian expatriate, Teejo George, who was on a vacation in his hometown in Kerala, passed away due to suspected leptospirosis, also known as rat fever, his family disclosed to Gulf News. The 48-year-old succumbed at a hospital in Kannur, just two days after admission for symptoms including diarrhoea and body pain, attributed to the suspected fever by the doctors.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease primarily transmitted during the rainy season through contact with contaminated water, soil or food, entering the body via cuts or mucous membranes, according to the World Health Organisation. Initial symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting or diarrhea, with a risk of severe second phase involving kidney or liver failure or meningitis.

Teejo, a senior sales supervisor at an engineering consultancy firm in Dubai for over 27 years, is survived by his mother and two brothers in Kerala and his wife and three children in the UAE. His employer paid tribute, highlighting his kindness, humility and warm smile that made him an integral part of the team. Hundreds attended his funeral on Sunday, attended by colleagues who flew from the UAE.

Kripesh Cheruthottumkara, the company's director, remembered Teejo as an invaluable asset who had been with the firm for over two decades, celebrated for his 25 years of service just two years ago. Teejo was known for his exceptional work ethic, extensive industry connections and willingness to assist colleagues in need. Friends and classmates remembered Teejo as a warm-hearted individual who loved the UAE and was deeply missed by all who knew him.
