Hyundai Motor workers to stage 4-day partial strikes amid wage dispute

Labor union of Hyundai Motor announced Tuesday it will initiate four days of partial strikes this week, following their inability to secure an agreement with management regarding wages. The union has opted for four-hour work stoppages on Wednesday and Thursday, and six-hour ones on Friday and Sunday. Last month, the union executed partial strikes amounting to 30 hours, and declined to work special shifts on four Saturdays, leading to an estimated production loss of 42,510 vehicles.

This latest walkout results from the persistent wage dispute between the management and the union. Their last round of negotiations took place on July 8. The union, comprising 40,000 members, is seeking a 149,600-won ($105.6) increase in their monthly base pay, along with a performance-based bonus equivalent to 30 percent of the company's net profit from the previous year.

Meanwhile, the company has proposed an 80,000-won ($60.2) increase in their monthly base pay, a performance bonus equivalent to 350 percent of the monthly salary, plus an additional 10 million won in stock shares.
