Government support needed to boost recycling investments – AGI

A member of the Plastic Sector of the Association of Ghana Industries has called for increased government support and incentives to boost recycling investments in the country. At the JoyNews/IMANI Africa National Dialogue on Plastic Waste Management, Dr Paa Kwesi Eduaful Abaidoo highlighted that companies within their association are engaged in recycling and are ready to support expanding the industry.

Dr Abaidoo emphasized that the main challenge lies in incentivizing businesses to scale up their recycling activities and diversify investments into recycling facilities and related enterprises. On August 11, Dr Abaidoo stated that while the sector is prepared to advance, it needs financial assistance from the government to enhance companies' capacity and invest in necessary infrastructure for large-scale recycling.

He stressed the importance of suitable incentives to encourage more private-sector participants to commit resources to recycling, thereby creating the capacity required to meet the growing demand for recycling services and facilities. Dr Abaidoo urged the government to provide the necessary financial support to bolster the financial strength of businesses in the sector.

He expressed hope that the concerns would be relayed to the relevant government authorities for consideration as part of the efforts to develop the recycling industry in Ghana. He also stressed that stronger collaboration between government and private-sector operators would be vital in establishing a sustainable and commercially viable recycling sector in Ghana.
