GNAT calls for more specialist teachers to strengthen inclusive education

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for more specialist teachers and improved training to strengthen Ghana’s special and inclusive education system. Dr Nicholas Taylor, Head of Organisation and Strategy at GNAT headquarters, emphasized this need during the 43rd Conference of Heads of Special and Inclusive Schools (COHESS) in Nungua, Accra.

He stressed that quality inclusive education requires teachers equipped to meet the diverse learning needs of children with disabilities, such as those trained in Braille, Ghanaian Sign Language, and low-vision therapy. Dr Taylor urged that every teacher must become an inclusive educator, making inclusive education a matter of justice and Ghana's commitment to Sustainable Development Goal Four.

He underscored the importance of COHESS in advocating for the welfare of teachers and learners in special and inclusive schools, and GNAT's decision to grant COHESS representation on its National Executive and National Council. Dr Taylor highlighted the stigma faced by children with disabilities, urging parents and communities to embrace them instead of hiding them.

He also called for a funding system that recognizes the higher costs associated with educating children with disabilities, suggesting COHESS advocate for a weighted capitation or intervention grant formula. Dr Taylor commended the dedication of special and inclusive school educators, emphasizing that their work is difficult and often unrecognized, but essential for creating inclusive learning environments for all children.
