From builder to the eyes of Ukraine’s front: the soldier with the callsign Dancer who went from Soviet launchers to drones

Fedir, a former construction worker, underwent a remarkable transformation during Ukraine's ongoing conflict. Initially serving as a diesel operator for S-300 launchers with a Lviv air defense brigade, he found himself retraining on advanced Western systems like the IRIS-T SLS. Fedir's first launches on this new equipment yielded impressive results, boasting three missiles and three targets down.

Recognizing the value of his work, he eventually transitioned to flying drones, becoming the eyes of the front line through his camera.

As a drone operator, Fedir's role is crucial but extremely dangerous. He describes the constant threat of being hunted by enemy forces, with the task of bringing a tail home after a successful flight proving the most challenging. On one fateful day, a Russian FPV drone located his group, leading to an artillery strike that left him with a serious concussion. Despite the risks, Fedir's determination to continue fighting remains unwavering, as he states, "This is my war."

The nickname "Dancer" came about through chance during combat situations. When jamming was at its heaviest and Fedir struggled to maintain control of his drone, his movements resembled a small involuntary dance. His comrades soon began referring to him as Dancer. After his rotation ended, Fedir chose to stay on the zero line, opting to continue his duties instead of returning to the IRIS-T system.

Looking towards the future, he hopes to find solace in ordinary things like having a family and experiencing peace to rebuild his life.
