Former Darwin councillor sentenced over 'insidious' domestic violence

Former Darwin councillor Paul Arnold has been sentenced to a two-year intensive community corrections order for a series of domestic violence offences. Found guilty of over a dozen charges related to incidents with his ex-girlfriend, Arnold will spend nine months under home detention. The judge described his conduct as "insidious, controlling and nasty," with one incident involving pushing her into a towel rack, headbutting her, and throwing her makeup bag.

Arnold also faced charges of aggravated stalking and breaching a domestic violence order. Despite pleading guilty to two counts of property damage, he denied being physically violent toward Thompson. Judge Austin noted there was no remorse for the harm he inflicted and highlighted implausible aspects of his evidence. Arnold, 54, also served as a Darwin councillor for three years before resigning in 2023.

Ms Thompson, the victim, expressed hope that her testimony would prevent others from experiencing similar harm, and emphasized the strength she gained from the legal process.
