Fix deadline for RCI reports to be tabled in Parliament, says Tuaran MP

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Lawmaker Wilfred Madius Tangau has called for amendments to the Commissions of Enquiry Act 1950 to establish a deadline for Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) reports to be presented in Parliament. Tangau argued that the tabling of RCI reports should not be left entirely to the government’s discretion, as the purpose of these commissions is to share the truth with the public.

His suggestion comes after several lawmakers raised concerns about the government’s decision to postpone the tabling of the RCI report on the Lembaga Tabung Haji, despite the report being completed in 2023. "The question shouldn’t be why the report’s tabling was delayed, but rather why the legal system didn’t set a time limit for presenting RCI reports in Parliament," Tangau stated during a debate on the Tabung Haji RCI report in the Dewan Rakyat.

Following the postponement, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim explained that the government delayed the report to allow for reforms within Tabung Haji and maintain depositor trust. The report was ultimately tabled in Parliament and is currently under debate.
