Fish kill recorded in Kyiv region water bodies – official

An ecological emergency has been reported in the Borschahivka community of Kyiv-Sviatoshyn, located within the Kyiv region, according to Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration Tymur Tkachenko. On Tuesday, local authorities observed a large-scale fish kill in one of the region's water bodies, and the same fate befell two additional bodies today. Preliminary estimates suggest that approximately three tonnes of fish have perished.

Tkachenko posted about the incident on his Telegram channel, revealing that specialists from relevant services have been conducting water samples at the scene to ascertain the source of the pollution. Experts are diligently working to determine the cause of this unfortunate event. One potential explanation points to a sewage leak occurring during repair operations at a nearby facility in Kyiv. The pollution may have entered the region's water bodies via the storm sewer network, Tkachenko explained.

To ensure public safety during the necessary measures, visitor access to the affected water bodies is currently restricted. An investigation-operational group and a Commission on Environmental Safety, Manmade Disaster and Emergency Response are actively engaged on-site. Borschahivka community comprises the villages of Petropavlivska Borschahivka, Sofiyivska Borschahivka, and Chaiky, which share a border directly with Kyiv.
