FG targets November for completion of remaining 164km Abuja-Kaduna-Kano highway

The Federal Government aims to complete the 164km stretch of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway by November 2026. Minister of Works Sen. Dave Umahi revealed this during a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by President Babatunde Akinteye. So far, the Federal Government has invested over N200 billion in the project.

The current phase and other components have received over 80% payment, with the government expecting full completion by the targeted date. This section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway is crucial as it forms part of the broader Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road project, awarded to Julius Berger in 2017. The 375km stretch in each direction will provide a continuous road connection, supporting the movement of passengers and goods between Abuja and Kaduna, Zaria, and Kano.

Umahi also voiced concern over highway vandalism, particularly the theft of reinforcement rods from construction sites. To combat this issue, the government plans to inaugurate a Highway Guard on the corridor to protect the infrastructure. Additionally, solar streetlights will be installed along the highway to enhance visibility and safety for motorists.

Furthermore, the Federal Government is targeting February 2028 for the completion of the dualisation of the 250km Makurdi–9th Mile–Enugu Highway, which will improve transportation between northern and eastern regions and strengthen economic linkages.
