Excusing unverified certificates among politicians threatens Nigeria’s future – Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential hopeful Peter Obi cautioned that permitting unverified academic qualifications among government officials could damage societal norms and jeopardize Nigeria's future. In a recent X post, Obi argued that this issue extends beyond individual politicians and pertains to accountability, integrity, and the values imparted to upcoming generations.

He urged Nigerians to resist the tendency to ignore questionable, missing, or unverified credentials merely due to political connections or preferred leaders.

Obi emphasized that the process by which individuals secure positions of authority is as crucial as their performance in office. He stressed that leadership must be founded on transparency and compliance with established standards. According to him, "normalising the disregard for fundamental credential verification could establish a perilous precedent, allowing unqualified individuals to take on vital professional and public roles."

The former Anambra State governor warned that such a pattern could ultimately weaken institutions and erode public confidence in professions necessitating thorough training and certification. Obi stressed that Nigeria should not trade its future for immediate political gains, insisting that truth, accountability, and due process should be applied uniformly to all citizens, irrespective of their status or political leanings.

He called on Nigerians to prioritize principles over emotions and place the country's long-term progress ahead of political expediency. Obi concluded that attaining a better Nigeria would demand both citizens and leaders to uphold the appropriate values, even when it is challenging or uncomfortable.
