EU, Meta and TikTok join forces after deadly mass rush to Spain’s Ceuta border

Over 100 people lost their lives when thousands of migrants tried to cross from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on July 30. The European Union, Meta, and TikTok have joined together to combat false information about border crossings. More than 70,000 individuals flocked to Ceuta after seeing misleading social media content suggesting migrants could enter Spain easily.

EU officials are collaborating with Meta and TikTok to stop criminal groups from spreading misleading content online, encouraging more dangerous attempts to cross the border. Henna Virkkunen, the EU's executive vice-president for technology, said Meta and TikTok would establish an 'ad-hoc escalation and cooperation mechanism' with fact-checkers to quickly identify and remove harmful material.

This initiative will involve fact-checking organizations like Maldita.es and the European Fact-Checking Standards Network. The EU and Europol are also monitoring the situation daily, working closely with Spain's digital economy minister, Óscar López, to prevent further mass crossings and potential loss of life. Online messages promoting another mass crossing on August 15 have already been identified, raising concerns about the rapid spread of disinformation.
