Environment Canada implements new alert system for extreme weather warnings

Environment and Climate Change Canada has introduced a new extreme weather alert system designed to reduce "alert fatigue." This system allows forecasters to draw polygons over areas encompassing severe weather warnings, providing a more targeted approach. Giselle Dookhie, an emergency preparedness meteorologist, explained that this will minimize the areas warned when zone-based forecasting was used, thereby reducing unnecessary notifications.

The new system, launched last fall, added color codes—yellow, orange, or red—to indicate the severity of the weather event. Yellow alerts warn of potentially damaging or disruptive weather, orange alerts indicate severe weather likely to cause significant damage or disruption, and red alerts are issued for very dangerous conditions that could lead to life-threatening impacts.

Despite the introduction of this system, blanket color-coded alerts still covered entire regions. The new polygon system, which began on Tuesday, will issue more precise warnings for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, targeting only the affected areas. This change is expected to significantly reduce alert fatigue, ensuring that Canadians take warnings seriously when they are relevant to their location.

Anthony Farnell, a Global News meteorologist, noted that this system, already in use in the U.S. for 16 years, has led to significant improvements there. He is hopeful that proper implementation in Canada will yield quick and substantial results, particularly in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Earlier warnings can lead to better protection of property and potentially save lives.

Environment Canada will maintain the color-coded warning system alongside the new polygon system during a transition period to help third-party weather platforms adapt. The broader regional system for weather watches remains in place.
