El-Sayed's Michigan primary win may put 2028 spotlight on Israel and Arab voices

Arab Americans, who make up nearly 300,000 residents in Michigan, may gain greater recognition from Democratic presidential contenders. The state is one of the first to hold a primary in the 2028 nominating calendar, following South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Virginia. El-Sayed's victory was endorsed by former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom, and he has received support from other Democratic figures such as Mark Kelly and Pete Buttigieg.

The Democratic National Committee has tentatively approved the new 2028 primary calendar, moving Michigan earlier in the process. A recent poll found that 40% of Americans believe the U.S. is too supportive of Israel, with a growing number of Democrats expressing this sentiment.

The shift in Democratic policy is evident, as 58% of Democrats now support blocking military sales to Israel, despite the measures being ultimately defeated. In 2024, the "Uncommitted" movement pushed for Palestinian American Rep. Ruwa Romman to speak at the Democratic National Convention, but this request was denied. However, the Michigan primary could provide a testing ground for candidates' positions on the U.S.-Israel relationship, with Democrats facing pressure to address the concerns of their diverse constituencies.
