Ebola deaths surpass 2,000 in Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported 2,011 confirmed Ebola deaths, marking the fastest-spreading outbreak on record according to health officials. The latest data from the country's public health institute reveals 4,381 confirmed cases across five provinces. The current outbreak, Congo's 17th, is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no vaccines or treatments are approved.

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern due to its rapid spread and high fatality rate. The study published in the journal Science suggests transmission may have begun as early as January in Ituri province, identifying over 500 suspected cases between January and May.

Delays in detection, ongoing conflict, and strained health services have exacerbated the virus's spread, complicating efforts to trace contacts, isolate patients, and curb transmission. The Congo's current outbreak has surpassed the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak in terms of both the number of deaths (28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths) and the speed at which deaths have accrued.

While it took nearly five months to reach 1,000 deaths in the previous outbreak, Congo's current outbreak has crossed that milestone in less than a month.
