Drone firm PDW lands $820 million Pentagon funding to build the next generation of UAS components as crackdown on foreign providers continues

The Pentagon has committed up to $820 million to Performance Drone Works (PDW) to expand domestic drone component manufacturing capacity. The funding aims to increase production of propulsion, power, and vision systems for small military drones. This expansion will occur at PDW's 90,000-square-foot facility in Huntsville, Alabama, with additional production taking place through partnerships with local industry.

These components will support Group 1 and Group 2 UAS platforms, which are lightweight systems used for lower-altitude military operations. Group 1 drones weigh less than 20 pounds and operate at altitudes up to 1,200 feet, while Group 2 systems weigh up to 55 pounds and operate below 3,500 feet. Once completed, the financing, combined with private capital, is expected to boost the production of these critical components.

This move is part of a broader effort by the Pentagon to reduce dependence on foreign sources for drone components, following concerns over potential vulnerabilities in the supply chain.
