Communities applaud early gains under Damang Gold Mine Limited

Communities surrounding the Damang Gold Mine Limited (DMGL) in Ghana's western region have expressed satisfaction with early developments following the mine's takeover. Speaking at a press conference, Nana Kwabena Amponsah IV, the Chief of the Bosomtwi Divisional Council, commended the positive relationship between the mine and its host communities.

The community has long sought increased participation in mining decisions, more local job opportunities, improved infrastructure, and a relationship based on mutual respect and ongoing engagement. These expectations seem to be taking shape as infrastructure projects, local employment, and community engagement intensify. Within just four months of DGML taking over, the community has seen the beginning of concrete progress.

Among the developments, a proposed airstrip at the Huni waste dump has begun initial earthworks and is being closely monitored by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipal Assembly. Another significant project is the construction of the Damang-Subri section of the Damang-Subri-Praso-Cape Coast road, which is crucial for the movement of people, goods, and services within the region.

Work on this road has commenced, and the community is hopeful that it will alleviate transportation challenges and improve access to essential services. Additionally, the DMGL has initiated the development of sports infrastructure, including parks that could serve as platforms for youth football development and talent identification.

Nearly 400 locals have entered the mine's recruitment pipeline, with 180 already engaged in various roles, including maintenance, heavy-duty driving, and security. These early accomplishments demonstrate the possibility of a more collaborative relationship between the mining company and its host communities, with the hope that these positive signs will continue to grow as the mine's life cycle progresses.
