Cineplex reports highest 2nd quarter amid rising theatre attendance

Cineplex Inc. has reported its highest second quarter in history, driven by a surge in movie-goers, according to the company's earnings call. The Canadian cinema chain reported a profit of $7.8 million in the April through June period, compared to a loss of $2.2 million the previous year. Theatre attendance reached 12.7 million patrons, up from 11.6 million at the same time last year.

Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob attributed the success to a diverse range of compelling content across multiple genres and formats. He noted that there were no single blockbusters or tentpole releases responsible for the increase. Prof. Charlie Keil of the University of Toronto's Cinema Studies Institute mentioned several high-earning films, including Michael, Super Mario Galaxy World, Toy Story 5, A Great Awakening, and The Drama.

He also pointed out that movies like Backrooms and Obsession continued to perform well into the spring months of 2026.

Martin Lefebvre, chair of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University, suggested that many popular movies already have "existing properties" that draw consumers in, such as the Mario Brothers franchise, and the fifth installment of the Toy Story series. Expanding on this, Cineplex CEO Ellis Jacob explained that showing FIFA World Cup matches at their locations during the tournament was an initial step in demonstrating the potential for Cineplex to engage with large cultural moments.

Experts suggest that Canadians are finding value in watching movies in theaters, with fewer people subscribing to multiple streaming platforms. One-half of Canadians go to the movies at least two to three times a year, with Gen Z and millennials more likely to do so. Major releases in 2026, such as The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, have already had significant impacts on the box office.
